Project: Management of Technology in China (Archived)

Interact with business and government leaders in China, looking forward to the next generation of opportunities in China.

Background: One of the most exciting countries in the world right now is China. UC Berkeley offered an incredible chance to learn first-hand about China and its many business opportunities through the MOT China Fellows program. I was fortunate enough to be chosen for the program in 2005.

The MOT China Fellows program was created in 2003 for Berkeley MBA, graduate engineering, and SIMS students with an interest in technology, business, and the rapid development of China's high tech economy. The fellowship includes a fall term course on technology and innovation in China and a scholarship towards a trip to China. The trip, while paid for by MOT funds, is completely organized by the fellows themselves. The students arrange to meet with Chinese entrepreneurs, policy makers, VCs and others playing a role in innovation and technological development in China, in high-tech industries ranging from manufacturing and telecommunication to software and biotechnology. Visits include high-tech parks, start-ups, universities and multinational organizations (MNCs).

The fellows travel to economic regions to meet with high tech executives, business leaders, researchers and government officials, and meet their counterparts at Chinese universities.

The MOT China course focuses on exploring the current technology and business landscape in China and provides students with practical tools for doing business in China. Students gain a detailed understanding of China's unique and evolving technology management challenges, and develop critical analysis and strategic decision skills needed to compete in China. Aside from learning entry strategies and discussing broad issues that must be mastered by every manager involved in technology business in China, students gain contacts to assist with their future business development plans in China.

The class examines the status of political, legal, business and technology development in China. It also provides varied perspectives and experiences from business leaders in China, including the experiences of non-Chinese high tech firms doing business in China.

Status: Completed trip to China in January 2006. Completed course in the fall of 2004. Assisted in running fall 2005 course.
